Three things people often call a watermark

The visual mark can be the logo and text that you can see with your eyes. Metadata can be described as data related to media files like creation information. Embedding a watermark means putting the imperceptible signal into the media itself. These signals are capable of being combined in one file and will be checked differently.

Why looking at the image is not enough

You cannot determine the imperceptibility of a signal through checking of a thumbnail image. Visual examination helps understand the media quality, whereas detecting requires a detector for a supported signal.

What to record when checking a file

Preserve the original filename, source, creation or download date, and the detector’s finding. In case you perform any edits on the document, do them on a separate output and test once again. The result refers only to the particular document and detector of that time.

How to interpret a result

Positive findings may be used as a basis for the proof of presence of an identifiable watermark in a digital file. Negative findings should be interpreted in light of coverage and supported formats, and they cannot serve as a proof that a file was authored manually.
